Glaciers are the river like masses of ice that flow downward under the influence of gravity. Valley glaciers occupies the valleys and flow downwards and are fed by the snow fields also known as Alpine or mountain glaciers. Piedmont glaciers are formed by the union of the spreading ends of several mountains glaciers on the large plain surface. Some of the feature of glaciers are

Glaciers are the river like masses of ice that flow downward under the influence of gravity. The glaciers are formed by the mixture of the spreading ends of several mountains glaciers on the large plain surface.

Some of the feature of glaciers are

  • Crag and tail : When ice meets an obstruction, it is diverted over and arround the rock projection and leave a gently sloping tail of a moraine in its lee, which is described as crag and tail 
  • Cirques: Basin like structures which serve as the starting points for a glaciers. These are formed due to the process of nivation. They are called  the corries (scotland), criques (France) and a CWMS (Wales)
  • Kettles, moulins and glacial mills are cylinderical hollows formed by the melting of an ice.
  • Aretes or Combs: These are also known as Knife edge where two corries exists on the mountain, the glacier gradually cuts them back and a sharp edge is formed which is known as a arete or a comb.
  • Eskers: These are the Glacio-fluvial stratified deposits occuring in the from of a network of a meandering ridges, They are mainly composed of sand and gravel. It is also reffered as Osser or Oss.
